DURATION: 3 week sprint (April-May 2022)
TEAM: Part of a team of 4 UX designers
MY ROLE: Each team member played a part in every step of the process however I was particularly involved in the user interviews, defining the problem, and creating the initial prototype.
TOOLS & SOFTWARE: Pen & paper, Google Forms, Figma, Zoom, Maze, Trello, Slack, Zoom
"You hit the nail on the head with the brief.. I love that with each iteration it got more simplified and that is really important to us, to try and keep it (the app) as simple as possible."

PROCESS
understanding the user and market
Conducted competitive and comparative analysis
-
Key finding - Facilitating connections between a community of Golfers as the app's primary benefit would set The Clubhouse apart from the competition giving it a unique selling point.
Preliminary survey with 22 responses and completed 8 interviews
Key findings -
-
Golfers like to try new courses, but they can be expensive and inaccessible.
-
They would like to have some choosing power on who they play with, instead of the courses matching them with random people.
-
Many want to play more but don’t like organizing groups as it can become a big hassle.
defining the problem
Built 3 personas and focused on the persona Mason but realised that our solution could help solve a pain point all three had in common
Mapped a user journey for Mason to identify opportunities and formed his problem statement:
Mason needs a golf community with a wealth of resources so that he can play golf with like-minded people whenever and wherever he wants.
Our key ‘how might we’ became: HMW connect like-minded players to a larger golfing community, while fostering a sense of inclusion for solo players or those who are new to the game?
Testing and ideating solutions
We held a design studio with the Client to generate ideas and agree on the key features involved with the connect feature.
The Key features decided on from the Design studio:
-
List of the tee times showing the available spaces
-
Various filters for the tee time listings
-
Include a calendar view
After sketching, we created a mid-fidelity prototype on Figma and ran usability tests including a Maze test.
We turned our prototype high-fidelity and ran another round of tests, implementing the feedback once more.
OUTCOME

Screens showing the onboarding process for a newcomer to the app

Screens as a user searches for a Tee time to join from the Connect page (dashboard), views a Tee time info page, and requests to join.

The Blog is the users community page with their social feed.
Screen showing the users personal Tee times and the chat with the Host which each new Tee time creates.
Final prototype in action!
conclusion
We created an onboarding experience to welcome newcomers to the app. It quickly and informatively presents the key features the app has to offer before they sign up.
We designed a multifaceted connect feature. To keep our primary user in mind we created the persona Mason, a golfer who needs a community with a wealth of resources so that he can play with like-minded people whenever and wherever he wants.
Our solution satisfies Mason’s needs by connecting him to other golfers via tee times and includes:
-
Connect page where users can find and join tee times, join communities, and connect with other users
-
Map and list view of available tee times which can be filtered
-
Inbox where users can arrange games and break the ice before meeting on the green
-
Social feed to encourage the daily use of the app
reflections
It was an amazing experience working with a real client on a live app. It was especially rewarding seeing how happy the client was with our final solution.
It felt very pertinent creating a feature that helps people connect in this post-covid world where meeting new people can be more difficult.
Key learnings:
-
As we had limited time with the client, I realised the importance of making the most of our meetings through good preparation.
-
I experienced the great benefit time boxing tasks can have. This method massively helped our team's productivity, allowing for collaborative working as well as individual focus periods before meeting back to discuss our findings and ensuring everyone is aligned.
testimonial
"It was a pleasure working with Grace on General Assembly Design Sprint with The Clubhouse. Grace and her team were tasked with improving the Golf Connection experience on our app. Grace worked collaboratively with the team to recruit and conduct user research, analyse golfer's needs and form hypotheses to test.
We were particularly impressed by Grace and the team's iterative approach to solving user problems through ideation, continuous testing and forming this into a clickable prototype. Grace ensured that we were involved throughout this process with clear communication and feedback loops.
The final playback and presentation clearly articulated the journey taken to form their understanding, hypothesis and iterations that met the needs of the initial brief and the user problems."
